What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep. Some are needed for the site to work; others are a convenience for the site owner. Browsers can also keep small amounts of data in “local storage”, which works much the same way and which we list below too.
Essential cookies
These are needed to run the site you asked for, so they are set without asking. They hold no tracking identifier.
| Cookie | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
PHPSESSID | Keeps you signed in as you move between pages, and holds the security token that protects forms against forgery. Set when you first use a page that needs a session. | Until you close the browser |
gtj_consent | Remembers your answer to the cookie banner so we do not ask again on every page. Set only when you answer. | 180 days |
Optional cookies
These are set only if you say yes in the cookie banner. If you ignore the banner or choose “Essential only”, they are never set. If a browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we do not count the visit even when the cookie is accepted.
| Cookie | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
gtj_visitor | Counts each browser once a year for the "Total visitors" number in the footer. The cookie holds only the value 1, nothing about you. Set only after you accept “Visitor count”; removed again if you withdraw. | 365 days |
| None of ours (Instagram sets its own) | Shows the Instagram posts and reels on event pages as you scroll to them, so you need not press play on each one. Instagram (Meta) then receives your request, exactly as if you had pressed play, and may set its own cookies. We set none for this. Loads by itself only after you allow “Instagram posts”; until then each post waits behind a play button. Withdraw and they wait behind it again. | Your choice is kept 180 days |
Other things kept in your browser
These stay on your device and are not sent to our server. They are set by what you do, not by visiting.
| Name | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
gtj_welcome_until, gtj_welcome_seen | Remembers that you closed the welcome pop-up for visitors who are not signed in, so it does not come back straight away. | 7 days / this visit |
welcomeMessageDismissed_geetanjali | Remembers that you dismissed the welcome message. | Until you close the tab |
evGuestProfile | Your name, roll number and mobile number for the next guest registration, only if you tick “Remember my details on this device”. “Clear saved details” removes it. | Until you clear it |
bl_recent_searches | Your last few searches on the blog page, to suggest them again. | Until you clear your browser data |
Signed-in committee members also have a few display preferences (table density, editor mode) stored the same way in the admin area.
Other companies
Nothing on the public pages loads from Google, a CDN or an advertising network by itself. Fonts, icons and scripts are served from this site. Instagram loads by itself only if you allow “Instagram posts” in the cookie banner. A few things you start yourself also involve other companies, which may then set their own cookies under their own policies:
- Continue with Google (sign-in) takes you to Google’s sign-in page.
- Show the map on the contact page loads Google Maps. Until you press that button, the map is a plain placeholder and no request goes to Google.
- Instagram posts and reels on an event page are Instagram’s own player. By default each one waits behind a play button and no request goes to Instagram until you press it. If you allow “Instagram posts” in the cookie banner (or press “Show the posts” on an event page), they load as you scroll to them. You can change your mind any time under “Cookie settings” in the footer. A reel that we host ourselves plays from this site.
Statistics
We count page views on our own server, without cookies, using one-way scrambled codes instead of your IP address or session. See the privacy policy for what is stored and for how long. We use no third-party analytics.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. Blocking the essential session cookie means you cannot sign in. Questions: support@geetanjali.niftem.in.
