Short Story

Rosie, the little miss sunshine

Rosie, the little miss sunshine

Rosie was a plump little ray of sunshine. She was 6 years old and was adored by all the neighbours. They lovingly called her 'sunshine'.

That day, the sunshine seemed to be covered by thick clouds. Rosie looked sad when the school bus dropped her off at around noon. Mrs Miller, the next-door neighbour, saw her and called out, "Hey! How are you Sunshine?" She went inside her house without replying. "Might have had a bad day at school." Mrs Miller said out loud and went back to reading her book.

Rosie didn't eat properly. She didn't even ask for cookies after lunch. Charlotte, her mom, was worried because she refused to tell her what was wrong. She had her dinner in silence and went upstairs without having dessert. Charlotte locked the door and went to her bedroom. Her husband Daniel was out of town for a business trip.

She didn't check up on her daughter as the lights were off and she didn't want to wake her up. Charlotte dozed off to sleep while reading. But around midnight, she heard a door creaking. She sat up and realized it was Rosie's door. She ran out.

Rosie was standing in the hallway, her long blond hair hiding her face. When she looked up, her eyes were bloodshot. Charlotte ran towards her and fell on her knees in front of her little girl.

"What's wrong baby?" She took her little face in both her hands. "Mommy, will Mia forgive me?" Mia was her best friend.

"Did you two argue over something?" Charlotte inquired. "Mia stole my new eraser. I loved my eraser. So when she went to pee, I smashed her head on the toilet seat. I think God took her." Rosie said with tears pooling in her eyes. Charlotte was out of words.
